When talking about UCAT Universities, we are talking about Medical Schools that require applicants to sit the UCAT as a part of the admission process in the UK, New Zealand or Australia. Apart from the UCAT, there is also BMAT. Some Medical Schools require applicants to sit BMAT instead of the UCAT. This article lists all the UCAT and BMAT Universities (Medical Schools).

It’s also important to remember, every Medical School uses the UCAT or BMAT differently, some have hard cut-off scores and some only use it for borderline applicants. Read more to find out how different universities use the UCAT.

In this article, you can also find statistics for lowest UCAT score offered interview in 2020 and an average UCAT score given interview for some medical schools.

Candidates’ UCAT scores are considered in our selection for interview but are not the sole indicator for selection. They are considered alongside actual and predicted academic achievement in deciding who will be selected for interview. A minimum UCAT cut-off score is NOT used. A score is allocated based on the applicant’s overall performance in UCAT compared with all other applicants to Aberdeen. The score we allocate is based on the total numerical score from the four subtests: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning and decision making. The SJT will not be scored, but it may be used in offer making when there are candidates with similar scores.

While we include the UCAT score within our selection process, we do not have a standard cut off value. Applicants will be ranked by their UCAT score and a certain number will be invited to an Interview Day, provided they meet our main academic entry requirements. Applicants with an SJT score of Band 4 (lowest band) will not be invited for interview for September 2019 entry onwards. Please note that the UCAT score of those applicants invited to interview is expected to vary year on year, and as such, it is not possible to give applicants an indication of the score that is required to attend an Interview Day.

UCAT scores and Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) form part of the selection process. UCAT scores can only be used to support an application if they were achieved in the relevant admissions cycle prior to your intended year of entry. The cut-off level is reviewed every year based on the number of applicants.

UEA does not have a cut off score. A high score is advantageous, however a low score does not disqualify an applicant from consideration. UCAT scores may be used to rank the applicants for selection for interview. The overall (cognitive) score is used alongside the interview score to rank and select applicants to whom an offer is made. The SJT component score is included within the interview score.

We consider the UCAT with all other aspects of the application. Interviews are allocated accordingly by UCAT score for those that meet all other screening aspects (i.e minimum academic requirements and satisfactory personal statement and reference). Additionally, we are required to manage the number of students admitted to our programme in line with targets set by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council (i.e. Home/EU, Rest of UK and International). Therefore the lowest total UCAT score we consider for interview may vary based on the applicant group. ‘The Situational Judgement’ section of the UCAT test will not be taken into consideration for entry in 2021.

Your UCAT score is going to be translated into the internal scoring scheme where you can get a maximum amount of 40 points for the UCAT, 15 points for SJT, 30 points for your GCSE and 15 points for contextual data. In 2018, 60% of offers were made to students with Band 1 SJT, 38% to students with Band 2 and 2% to students with Band 3. If you meet the UCAT threshold we apply, and you achieve Band 1 or 2 in the Situational Judgement Test (SJT), you will likely be invited to interview as long as you meet our minimum academic requirements (for example, GCSE and predicted grades).

There are, however, some operational constraints on the number of interviews available in any given year. Where the number of highly scoring candidates exceeds the number of interview slots available, we will rank candidates according to UCAT total score and SJT band.
We do not consider applicants who achieve Band 4 in the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) element of the UCAT. Applicants with a SJT Band 3 are welcome to apply. However, we will prioritise applicants who are in Bands 1 and 2 in both our UCAT and holistic assessments.

We do not have a fixed UCAT threshold score when selecting for interview. We do not accept applicants who achieve Band 4 on the Situational Judgement Test on the UCAT. To make sure that in most situations a few points higher or lower won’t impact an application, we assign our own points based on the UCAT results. From 2022 entry onward, based on recent studies, we now place more value on your verbal reasoning ability and so will double the score you get in that category. A maximum of 60 points can be awarded for the cognitive skills elements of the UCAT.

801 to 900 score = 12 points
701 to 800 score = 10 points

Graduates who apply for the five-year programmes and four-year GEP programme who meet the minimum academic criteria will be ranked against the other graduate applicants applying in that year according to 50:50 weighting applied to the UCAT score and academic ability as measured using a points weighting of degree classification or postgraduate degrees

You will not be offered an interview if you obtained a total UCAT score below the third decile. Please note there is no guarantee that you will be offered an interview if you score above the third decile ( 2370 in 2020).

Applicants meeting these requirements will be ranked on the basis of their UCAT global score. Those ranked in the top 400 or so will be given an interview. You should bear in mind that as we short-list the same number of applicants every year, and we use two variables (which carry the same weight), there is no actual cut-off. How well you need to do in BMAT will be entirely dependent on how well every other applicant does, and how well you have done in GCSEs (if you have taken them). A slightly weaker performance at GCSE may be compensated for by a very good BMAT score, and vice-versa. Oxford rely heavily on BMAT scores and GCSE performance (where available) during short-listing.

However, to offer a rough guide, we would suggest that the typical average applicant should be working towards a 6 (a 7 is still fairly rare) in sections 1 or 2; do note that sections 1 and 2 receive greater weighting (40% each) than section 3 (20%). It’s important to remember that Section 1 and 2 are more important than the section 3. In section 3, the content determines ⅔ of the score and your English determines ⅓.
