Ultimate Guide – What Grades do I need for Medical School?

A summary of grades and subjects required for Medical School

A brief summary of the grades and subjects required

If you’re wanting to study medicine, you’ll need a strong set of GCSE’s and A-Levels. Requirements do vary between medical schools. For a standard entry 5-year medical degree, at a minimum you’ll need five A* or A grades at GCSE and at least AAB at A level in biology or chemistry, one other science or maths and a third subject. Scouring university websites for individual requirements can be time consuming and a bit of a headache. This page will outline the GCSE, Scottish National, A-Level, Scottish Highers and International Baccalaureate requirements for every UK medical school.

All information has been taken directly from the University websites and is correct for the 2019/20 application cycle.

It is important to note that at A-Level or equivalent, general studies and critical thinking are often not accepted by Medical Schools and should be avoided to maximise options available to apply to. Subjects with overlapping content: PE and Biology, Biology and Human Biology and Maths and Further Maths may also not be considered.

I’ve got the right grades in the wrong A-levels, how can I go to medical school?

Medical degrees with a foundation or preliminary year are designed to help students who achieved highly at A-Level or equivalent, without taking the correct subjects. Foundation years are taken before entering a standard 5-year medical degree. They are designed to prepare students for a medical degree by giving them the necessary scientific background knowledge. For a foundation year degree, expected A level or equivalent grades are often still AAA at a minimum.

Access to medicine courses

Access to medicine courses or “gateway years” cater to students without the academic requirements for Medical School entry, but that meet specific eligibility criteria such as students who are high in ability, but have barriers to their learning due to their circumstances at school. These courses are 6 years in total. As with foundation year degrees, the first year is designed to give students the necessary background and scientific knowledge needed to complete the standard five-year medical degree on completion of the gateway year. As these are access to medicine courses adjustment may be made to entry requirements providing students meet the eligibility requirements, so AAA may not be necessary.

Below we have summarised the entry requirements for each Medical School in the UK;

Please note – this information is correct at the time of collation and was taken from the University Website of the relevant Medical School.
